♕ || During the time that Ciel was actually being held captive by the cultist group, everyone in London had presumed him to be dead, which left Elizabeth without a fiancee. Making her a semi-widower, it would’ve been difficult for most other girls to find another fiancee who was willing to wed her, but in Elizabeth’s case there was someone more than willing to step into the role straight away.
Though Elizabeth was taking proper time to grieve for her presumed to be dead fiancee, Charles Grey on the other hand was taking this rare opportunity to make the Midford daughter his own wife to be. Naturally he had breached the topic to Frances in passing several times, to gauge her reaction to the possibility, and she’d been open to the idea and vocalized as much to Charles. Though he had enough money to pay for the dowry right away, Charles being the picky man that he is wanted the perfect ring for when he approached Alexis and officially asked for Elizabeth’s hand. This process naturally didn’t happen overnight, and the more time that passed and Ciel continued to be presumed dead, Charles got more and more confident that it was in fact true, so he was in no particular rush to approach Alexis.
But that nonchalant attitude ended up costing Charles his plans of marrying Elizabeth, as Ciel actually returned home three days before Charles was due to go over to the Midford’s for a luncheon and ask the patriarch for his daughter. When it was discovered that Ciel was actually alive and well after all, unfortunately for Charles it dashed any hopes he had with the Midford parents, as they happily accepted Ciel back as Lizzie’s fiancee as he rightfully was.
While Ciel was brought up to speed with everything of importance in London that he missed in his absence, Frances did tell Ciel of the tentative plans to have Charles become engaged to Elizabeth, but now that Ciel was home and alive he was reclaiming his position as engaged to Elizabeth and things went back to as they were. Needless to say, he was rather smug about taking away the one thing Charles wanted most (aside from seeing Ciel humiliated), though he doesn’t often rub the fact in Charles’ face. Only when it would really hurt him.
